Zawoja

The largest in terms of area village in Poland, with outstanding qualities of climate, landscape and tourism; hence in the interwar period became a renowned holiday resort. Zawoja probably already existed at the end of the sixteenth century as part of the village Skawica and was called Upper Skawica. For the first time in documents in 1646 as a newly set Zawoje. The name of the village is the origin of Wallachia; derives from Daco-Romanian words zavoiu (wetland forest on steep bend in the river), and originally sounded Zawój. The legend derives the name of the village from the word passionately, linking it with the robbers, and also from "zawojów" or women's embroidered handkerchiefs, of which the village was famous, or the winding, coiling, winding road.
In the nineteenth century in Zawoja Centre was a center of iron smelter in Makow aid. It consisted of a double oven and him water hammer, so-called. ironworks. Around this same time in Zawoja Wilczna acted match factory and steam sawmill. The village also worked numerous water tartaczki, fulleries and mills. Today Zawoja is divided into three parishes in Zawoja Lower (Center), in Zawoja Upper (Wilczna) and Zawoja Zakamień. Before 1819, the first parish in Zawoja Center first village belonged to the parish in Mucharz, and from 1646 years to the parish in Maków Podhalański. The other two parishes were created recently: in 1981 in Zawoja Zakamień in 1988 in Upper Zawoja.

Zawoja most valuable monument is the parish church of St. Clement Pope, built in the years 1757-1759, rebuilt in 1888. Near the church is
a wooden, one-storey station Babiogórski, the object in which the early
twentieth century work station site Tatra Society. At the nearby cemetery lies well-known poet Tatras - Franciszek Henryk Siła–Nowicki (1864-1935). Here stands a chapel dedicated to St. Anne at the end of the eighteenth century, and a number of nineteenth-century historic tombstones. In Zawoja Policzna is a beautiful brick chapel. St. John the Baptist, covered with a shingle roof with a bulbous cupola, the so-called outlaws. Probably dates from the eighteenth century. Zawoja Mosorne In turn, there is a wooden chapel. Our Lady of the Angels, built by the local host in 1905-1908.
Zawoja complex retains many old roadside shrines and statues of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In remote from the center of hamlets can still see a few examples of traditional construction. In
Zawoja Czatoża preserved complex of three series set stone cellars,
covered with wooden sheds, as well as a wooden belfry Loretto.
In
Zawoja Markowa on the Role of Mark, there is an interesting local
museum of folk architecture, founded and run by Oddział PTTK Ziemi Babiogórskiej in Sucha Beskidzka. It is worth noting that the museum, like Zawojski the parish church of St. Clement, were included in the Wooden Architecture Route running through the region: śląskie, małopolskie i podkarpackie.
Zawoja
is the seat of the Directorate Babiogórski National Park (BgPN), which
is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary (created in 1954). It is housed in a stylish building in the area of Zawoja Barańcowa. There
is, moreover Educational Center, which includes a museum exhibition
composed of parts of natural and ethnographic and Garden Plants Babia
Góra (rockery). BgPN paved and arranged some interesting educational paths that complement a dense network of hiking trails PTTK. Zawoja also has many marked bike trails and several ski slopes.
Zawoja interesting natural attraction is the 8-foot-tall waterfall on Mosorny Stream one of the biggest in the Beskid Mountains.
It is worth to mention a few zawojskich monuments. These are: a boulder with a plaque in Zawoja Centre, set up outside the house in which he lived and died, Franciszek H. Siła-Nowickii; Professor monument Dr. Władysław Szafer (1886-1970) and Dr. Hugo Zapałowicz (1852-1917), distinguished botanists for the conservation of Babia Góra; obelisk in honor of Pope John Paul II at the pass Krowiarki and also to pass Krowiarki, symbolic grave of prof. Zenon Klemensiewicz, world-renowned linguist, who died in a plane crash near the top of the Policy in 1969.

December 2003, in Zawoja Policzne modern chairlift opened on Mosorny
Groń (1045 m) and the accompanying ski track with a length of 1 420 336 m
height difference to me. The team of four lifts Surface lifts also
works in Zawoja Czatoża.
Many people visit in Zawoja high Przysłop hamlet located where the peculiar attraction is a modern windmill - wind turbine.
In Zawoja since 1992, operates known Juzyna regional team, winner of the top prizes at national and provincial surveys folklore. Recently formed a small team Juzyna children. The local musical folklore also disseminates Bugajskich family folk band. Zawoja annually held event folklore - Autumn Babiogórska and winter - Winter in Zawoja - sports event folklore.
